Enjoy an Evening of Passionate Flamenco Music and Dance Live at Nighttown! Oberlin Professor of Dance and Company.

Featuring: Alice Blumenfeld (dancer), Marija Temo (flamenco guitar and vocals), Wendy Clinard (dancer), & Liam Smith (percussion/cajón).

Enjoy flamenco in it’s most intimate, fiery, passionate, and traditional setting–a tablao. Through their mastery of improvisation the artists express the full range of emotions in the complex and mesmerizing flamenco musical styles, building off each other’s sparks to draw the audience into this Spanish art form. 

Marija Temo, described as a “triple threat,” is recognized as a virtuoso classical/flamenco guitarist, flamenco vocalist, conductor, and former dancer.  Guest soloist with The Zac Brown Band; Flamenco Documentary, “Sobre las Olas,” Jose Greco 100th anniversary tribute with guest artists, Carmela, Lola, and Jose Greco II, and performances for former Spanish Ambassador, Don Jaime de Ojeda; the Crown Prince of Spain; and former Vice President, Al Gore. Ms. Temo is currently Guitar Chair and faculty at the Wisconsin Conservatory of Music.

Alice Blumenfeld is a U.S. Presidential Scholar in the Arts and a Fulbright recipient in Dance. She fell in love with flamenco at age 12, and since then it has been the driving force in her life, founding ABREPASO Flamenco in 2016 and currently faculty at Oberlin College. She has toured nationally with Flamenco Vivo and performed as a soloist with their New York-based company, and Blumenfeld has performed internationally in Germany and Spain. Her choreography has been commissioned by The Kennedy Center for Performing Arts, The National Hispanic Cultural Center, and several universities. Blumenfeld holds an MFA in dance from Hollins University and a BA from New York University.

Wendy Clinard is the Artistic Director of Clinard Dance Theatre, a global interdisciplinary ensemble founded in 1999. Her collaborative efforts with local and internationally-renowned musicians, dancers, and artists have resulted in the creation of five full works. Several of these works have toured the midwest as well as internationally in India and Syria. After completing a BFA at The Art Institute of Chicago in 1993, Clinard embarked on a rigorous apprenticeship with flamenco dancer Edo Sie and augmented her studies in Spain with notable teachers such as Juana Amaya and Hiniesta Cortez.

Liam Smith is an Ohio based artist, composer, and percussionist. Having studied under Jamey Haddad, Michael Rosen, and Aurie Hsu while at the Oberlin Conservatory of Music, Liam performs regularly in the worlds of orchestral and contemporary music. Having performed throughout Europe, North America, and South America, Liam has premiered works by the likes of James Wood, Vijay Ayer, Joungmin Lee, and Shihui Yin. Liam is a founding member of Candombe Joia, and a founding member of Grupo Precisão and performs regularly with Moises Borges, Samba Joia, and has performed with such artists as Gil Shaham, Gamin Kang, Edward Perez, Natchito Herrera, Christina Perisoco, Chad Smith, and Weezer.
